In places like British Columbia, you get your marriage license from London Drugs for some reason. “Some interesting problems can arise for couples who have participated in religious marriage ceremonies in Ontario, and some may find out they’re not legally married after all, Toronto lawyer Michael Cochrane writes in Advocate Daily.” Let’s talk about something that many people overlook until it’s too late: marriage licenses.…
What to do when workplace issues turn violent? “The violence recently seen in a Toronto workplace reminds us that not a year goes by without some horrific workplace violence. Would you believe that in the United States, more than 1,000 people die each year as a result of violence in their workplace? When you think of it, that is more than 20 people a week killed at work.” Let’s talk about something that doesn’t make the headlines until it’s too late: workplace violence. A shocking incident in a Toronto office recently brought this issue to the forefront again. It’s unsettling…
The court system – not the Divorce Act – needs updating to improve access to justice in family law and create more effective processes, says Toronto lawyer Michael Cochrane. If the gift is a hotel and/or…

Whether it’s the high-pitched yelping and yapping of an anxiety-addled chihuahua or the terror-inducing snarl of a pit bull or rottweiler, living near a household with a dog that incessantly barks can be audibly torturous and a source of constant stress. If your neighbour’s dog is keeping you up at night waking you up in the morning, or just being a noisy nuisance at all hours of the day, it’s reasonable to wonder how you can legally put an end to the cacophonous barking. But what are your options if you don’t want to move or deal with bad neighbours…
“The provincial government has room to grow when it comes to facilitating public policy issues, says Toronto lawyer Michael Cochrane, who recently spoke on the topic at a conference marking the 20th anniversary of the Environmental Bill of Rights.” Let’s be honest—most people have no idea what the Environmental Bill of Rights actually is, let alone how it affects their lives. Are you wondering how to exercise freedom of information to access the information you need? There is a law called the Access to Information Act. It allows Canadian citizens, people with permanent residency, and companies located in Canada the right to get information from the Canadian government. Sometimes, when the federal government doesn’t want to give you specific information, you might need to file a lawsuit in the Federal Court. An example might be a veteran who wants access to their Veterans Affairs medical…
Bill C-560 was a failed attempt in Canada to try and change the Divorce Act. The goal was to push for equal access for both parents to the kids.
