OTTAWA, ON – August 22, 2013 – After laying a total of 63 charges under the Consumer Protection Act against Ontario Consumers Home Services and its directors, the Ministry of Consumer Services has withdrawn all charges.
The decision to withdraw was not a surprise to company president Vitali Godonooga, who held firm that, “Ontario Consumers Home Services prides itself on its relations with customers and the provision of home services rentals and sales in a manner above and beyond its competitors.”
The negative media attention aroused by the case caused considerable difficulty for Ontario Consumers Home Services, which saw a dramatic fall in the sale and rental of hot water heaters, air conditioners, and other home service products in the Ontario region.
Looking forward, CEO Vasili Tatarinov said, “We are pleased that the company can now continue building and maintaining its customer base and reputation, and we are extremely appreciative to all our valued customers and stakeholders who have stuck with us during this difficult process.”
“This was an important case for the ministry and the company, and not a typical prosecution by virtue of the number of charges involved and the difficult process to get it fully resolved,” said Pradeep Chand of Brauti Thorning Zibarras LLP, the lawyer who represented Ontario Consumers Home Services.
“The case has resulted in numerous hours of work by the defence and the Crown to achieve an outcome that was entirely within the public interest,” Chand said.
