Teacher found not guilty of sex assault
Toronto criminal lawyer Peter Brauti’s client Mary Gowans has been found not guilty of sexual assaulting her former student.
“Ms. Gowans is relieved that this ordeal is over,” Brauti says. “She was confident from day one that she would be found not guilty, but the process has ruined her life.”
Gowans, 43, was on trial this week after it was alleged she had a sexual relationship with the 15-year-old boy between June 2009 and January 2010. See Prior Story
“The reputational damage has been extreme,” Brauti says. “She now looks forward to trying to put this matter behind her and focusing on her family.”
Justice John McMahon delivered his verdict today. Immediately afterward, Gowans was in tears as the teen walked out of the room shaking his head, Global Toronto reports. Read Global Toronto
