Judge made the “right decision” in teacher trial
Toronto criminal lawyer Marcy Segal says Justice John McMahon made a “heroic” decision in the recent trial of a former teacher accused of sexual assault.
Mary Gowans, who was represented by criminal lawyer Peter Brauti, was found not guilty of sexual assaulting her former student – an outcome Segal agrees with.
“I think Peter Brauti did an awesome job for her,” Segal tells CTV News. Watch Marcy Segal on CTV News
“I think there was a lot of pressure politically, I think this case was sensationalized.”
Gowans, 43, was on trial last week after it was alleged she had a sexual relationship with the 15-year-old boy between June 2009 and January 2010.
“I think she’s gone through an incredible ordeal,” Segal says of Gowans. “I think it’s a very daunting task for her to move forward.”
