Toronto criminal lawyer Sam Goldstein tells Law Times, in a story about Newmarket’s triage court that’s designed to cut unnecessary court appearances, the system encourages people to plead guilty who shouldn’t.
He notes when people are in custody and see they won’t get a trial for months, they’d rather deal with it quickly, especially if the Crown is offering a lighter sentence. ”It’s about saving money at the cost of justice,” says Goldstein.
